EDUCATION:
1956 - 1966 - studied at secondary schools No.9 and No.8, Bryansk;
1970 - graduated from the Myasnikov Kacha Air Force pilots school, specialization-command-staff, qualification - pilot-engineer;
1977 - graduated from aircraft testing and pilots training center 267, Akhtubinsk, Astrakhan region;
1976 - 1980 - studied at the Akhtubinsk branch of the MAI Vzlet department, specialization - aircraft construction (part-time department) and got the diploma of engineer;
1995 - graduated from the Russian Armed Forces Humanitarian Academy.
OCCUPATION BEFORE JOINING COSMONAUT CORPS:
from June 25, 1970 to October 1976 - a pilot, a senior pilot and air squad commander of Guards FAR 85 in Western Germany and of Guards FAD 31;
from June 29, 1977 to September 1985 - a test-pilot, senior test-pilot, chief engineer of the test center, Akhtubinsk.
DATE OF JOINING COSMONAUT CORPS (GROUP NUMBER, DATE):
September 2, 1985 - by the State Interdepartmental Board decision selected as a cosmonaut candidate from the Central Scientific Research Air Force Institute and assigned to the GCTC (the ninth group);
January 8, 1988 - by the order of the Air Force Commander-in-chief enrolled in the cosmonaut corps of the GCTC to a position of cosmonaut-tester of the second group.

BACK-UP ACTIVITY:
February - September 1989 - a back-up crew commander to the MIR together with V. Sevastyanov and R. Stankyavichus;
September 1989 - February 1990 - a back-up crew commander of the Soyuz TM-9 on the Primary Expedition-6 program to the MIR orbital complex together with V. Sevastyanov;
February to August 1990 - a commander of the Soyuz TM-10 back-up crew on the Primary Expedition-7 program to the Mir station, first along with V. Sevastyanov, and from June - along with M. Manarov;
August 1, 1990 - a back-up for G. Manakov, the Soyuz TM-10 commander;
February 8 - June 4, 1993 - a back-up crew commander the Soyuz TM-17 on the Primary Expedition-14 program together with Y. Usachev and Andre-Deshays-Claudie (France);
July1, 1993 - a back-up for V. Tsibliyev, the Soyuz TM-17 crew commander;
October 1, 1997 - January 1998 - a backup crew commander of the Primary Expedition-25 along with S. Treschev and Andre-Deshays-Claudie (France);

SPACE FLIGHTS PERFORMED:
The first flight: December 2, 1990 to May 26, 1991 - a commander of the Soyuz TM-11 and Mir orbital complex on the Primary Expedition-8 program along with M. Manarov and T. Akiyama. Worked aboard the Mir station together with G. Manakov, G. Strekalov, A. Artsebarsky and S. Krikalev. Landed together with M. Manarov and H. Sharman. During the flight he performed four EVA operations. Total EVA time: 20 hours 36 min. Flight duration: 175 days 01 hours 50 min. 42 sec. Call sign: Derbent-1;
The second flight: from January 8, to July 9, 1994 - a commander of the Soyuz TM-18 and Primary Expedition-15 on the Mir program along with Yu. Usachev and V. Polyakov. Had the mission aboard the station along with V. Tsibliyev, A. Serebrov, Yu. Malenchenko and T. Musabaev. Flight duration: 175 days 01 hours 50 min. 42 sec. Call sign: Derbent-1;
The third flight - from February 20 to August 28, 1999 a commander of the Primary Expedition-27 aboard the Soyuz TM-29 and Mir orbital complex along with S. Avdeyev (flight engineer of the previous expedition), Andre-Deshays-Claudie (flight engineer-2, France, ESA) and I. Bella (cosmonaut-researcher, Slovakia). He made three EVA operations. Total EVA duration: 17 hours 48 min. Flight duration: 188 days 20 hours 16 min. 19 sec. Call sign: Derbent-1;
The fourth flight : from October 29 to October 31, 2001 – a commander of the ISS second visiting crew aboard the Soyuz TM-33 transport vehicle along with K. Kozeyev (flight engineer) and Andre-Deshays-Claudie (flight engineer-2, France, ESA). Flight duration: 9 days 18 hours 59 min.
