DATE AND PLACE OF BIRTH: August 2, 1934, the RSFSR (Russia), Moscow region, Pavlovsky Posad town.
NATIONALITY: Russian.
EDUCATION:
1941 – 1948 – studied in secondary schools of the following towns: Pavlovsky Posad, Kuibyshev (at present – Samara), Syzran, Moscow and Teheran (Iran), where he lived with his parents, the officers of Ministry of Traffic;
June 1953 – graduated from the 6th Military Air Force School of Pilot Basic Training;
1955 – graduated from the Kacha Red Banner Air Force School of Pilots named after A.F. Miasnikov, Severo-Kavkazski Military District;
September, 1961 – January, 1968 – a student of the engineering faculty of the N.E. Zhukovsky Higher Military Engineering Academy. After the graduation was qualified as “pilot-cosmonaut-engineer”;
1973 – was granted a degree of Candidate of Technology.
OCCUPATION BEFORE JOINING COSMONAUT CORPS:
From January 23, 1956 – a pilot, from December 23, 1957 - senior pilot of fighter aviation regiment 23 of fighter aviation division 17.
DATE OF ENROLLMENT IN COSMONAUT CORPS (GROUP NUMBER, DATE):
March 7, 1960 - was enrolled as a student-cosmonaut of the Air Force Cosmonaut Training Center by the Air Force commander-in-chief order (the 1st enrollment);
January 25, 1961 - was appointed to a cosmonaut position and qualified as “Air Force cosmonaut”.
RATING: a first-class military pilot (1963), a first-class cosmonaut (1978).
BACK-UP ACTIVITY:
November, 1961 – May, 1962 – preparation for the first group flight of “Vostok” spacecraft as a back-up to the Vostok-3 spacecraft;
August 11, 1962 – back-up to the Vostok-3 pilot A. Nikolayev.
SPACEFLIGHTS PERFORMED:
The 1st flight – June 14 - 19, 1963, as a pilot of the Vostok-5 spacecraft. Performed the group flight with the Vostok-6 spacecraft ( pilot – V. Tereshkova ). Flight duration: 4 days 23 hours 07 minutes. Call sign: “Yastreb-1”;
The 2nd flight – September 15 - 23, 1976 as a commander of the Soyuz-22 spacecraft together with V. Aksionov. During the flight the MKF-6 multiple-zone camera, made in GDR, was tested and used. Flight duration: 7 days 21 hours 52 minutes 17 seconds. Call sign: “Yastreb”;
The 3rd flight – August 26 – September 3, 1978, as a commander of the Soyuz-31 spacecraft Soviet-German crew on the program of the Salyut-6 orbital station Visiting Crew 4 together with S. Jaehn (GDR). Worked on the station together with V. Kovalenok and A. Ivanchenkov. Flight duration: 7 days 20 hours 49 minutes 04 seconds. Call sign: “Yastreb”.
DISCHARGE FROM COSMONAUT CORPS: 1982 - is discharged from the cosmonaut corps because of the appointment to a new position.
ACTIVITY AT THE GCTC:
January 26, 1982 – Chief GCTC Scientific Research Institute Department 1 Division 3;
October 9, 1986 - Chief GCTC Scientific Research Institute Department 1 Division 13;
April 2, 1988 – was transferred to the reserve having reached the age limit.
