EDUCATION:
1979 - graduated from Yavas secondary school;
1983 – graduated from the Kharkov Higher Air Force School named after S.I. Gritsevets with the major of command tactical fighter-bomber aviation, qualifying pilot-engineer;
1990 – 1994 – a student of the correspondence department of the Yu. Gagarin Air Force Academy.
OCCUPATION BEFORE JOINING COSMONAUT CORPS:
from December 15, 1983 – at the command of the Air Force Commander-in-chief of the Odessa Military Command;
from December 5, 1983 – a pilot of Guards FAR 684 of FAD 119, Tyraspol, Moldavia, Odessa Military Command;
from November 30, 1984 – a pilot of FAR 161 of FAD 119, Lymanskoe settlement, Odessa Military Command;
from December 10, 1986 – a senior pilot the same place.
DATE OF JOINING COSMONAUT CORPS (GROUP NUMBER, DATE):
March 26, 1987 - by the State Interdepartmental Board decision recommended for the enrollment in the cosmonauts corps of the Air Force Cosmonaut training center (the eighth group);
October 6, 1987 – by the order of the Air Force Commander-in-chief was appointed as a candidate for the sixth cosmonaut-tester group;
From August 30, 1989 – a cosmonaut–tester of the first group.
RATING:
1984 – a first-class military pilot (total flight time: 900 hours)
an Air Force airborne regiment instructor (170 parachute jumps);
1996 – a second-class cosmonaut.
BACK-UP ACTIVITY:
November 1997 - October 2000 – a commander of the Soyuz TM backup crew for the first ISS expedition along with M. Turin and K. Bowersox (USA).
SPACE FLIGHTS PERFORMED:
The first mission March 14 - July 7, 1995 a commander of the Soyuz TM-21 (used for the launch) and Mir orbital station and the Atlantis( landed aboard it) on the Primary Expedition-18 along with G. Strekalov and N. Thagard (USA). From June 29 through July 4, 1995 also flew along with A. Solovyov, N. Budarin (PE-19), from June 29 to July 7 along with the US astronauts: R. Gibson, C. Precourt, A. Baker, G. Habaugh & B. Dunbar (the STS-71crew who saw the first docking of the Shuttle with the Mir station). During the mission made three EVA operations. Total EVA duration: 18 hours 12 min. And two times in the transfer chamber (43 min.). Flight duration: 115 days 08 hours 43 min. 02 sec. Call sign: Uragan-1;
The second mission August 11 to December 17, 2002 an ISS pilot aboard the Shuttle along with M. Turin and F. Cubertson (USA). From August 13 to August 21, 2001 flew along with U. Usachev, D. Voss, S. Helms. During the mission had four Eva operations. Total EVA duration: 18 hours 40 min. Mission duration: 128 days 20 hours 44 min.
