EDUCATION:
1979 - graduated from Kishinev secondary school No.59;
1983 – graduated from the of the Kharkov Higher Air Force School named after S.I. Gritsevts, specialization-command tactical fighter aviation qualifying military pilot-engineer;
1994 – graduated from the Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography with the natural resources explorations major.
OCCUPATION BEFORE JOINING COSMONAUT CORPS:
From October 15, 1983 – at the command of the Air Force Commander-in-chief of the Odessa Military Command;
from December5, 1983 – a pilot, from November 30, 1984 – a senior pilot of the Odessa Military Command, Tyraspol, Moldavia.
DATE OF JOINING COSMONAUT CORPS (GROUP NUMBER, DATE):
March 26, 1987 - by the State Interdepartmental Board decision recommended for the enrollment in the cosmonauts corps of the Air Force Cosmonaut training center (the eighth group);
from October 6, 1987 – a candidate for the sixth cosmonaut-tester group;
from August 30, 1989 – a cosmonaut–researcher of the first group.
RATING:
1984 – a third-class military pilot, an Air Force airborne regiment instructor (145 parachute jumps).
1990 – a second-class cosmonaut.
2002 – a first-class cosmonaut.
BACK-UP ACTIVITY:
July 4 – September 9, 1994 – a commander of the backup crew for the Primary Expedition-17/ Evromir-94 along with S. Avdeyev and P. Duque (Spain, ESA);
October 4, 1994 – a backup for A. Victorenko, the Soyuz TM-20.
SPACE FLIGHTS PERFORMED:
The first flight - September 3 - February 29, 1995 – a commander of the Soyuz TM-22 and Mir Primary Expedition-20 mission on the program PE-20/Evromir-95 along with S. Avdeyev and T. Reiter (FRG, ESA). Flew along with the Primary Expedition-19 (A. Solovyov, N. Budarin) and PE-21 (Y. Onufrienko and Y. Usachev) and also along with the Atlantis (STS-74) crew made up of J. Halsell, J. Ross, K. Kameron, W. McArthur and C. Hadfield). During mission had two EVA operations. Total EVA duration: 3 hours 35 min. Flight duration: 179 days 01 hours 41 min. 46 sec. Call sign: Uran-1;
The second mission October 31, 2000 – March 21, 2001 – launched aboard the Soyuz TM-31 under the ISS Expedition-1 program as the commander of the transport vehicle and ISS pilot along with S. Krikalev and W. Shepherd (USA). Landed aboard the Discovery. Flight duration: 140 days 23 hours 38 min. 55 sec.
The third mission April 25, 2002 – May 5,2002 – a commander of the third visiting crew aboard the Soyuz TM-34 transport vehicle along with Vittori Robertto (flight engineer, Italy, ESA) and Mark Shuttleworth (mission participant, SAR). Flight duration: 9 days 21 hours 25 min.
