Military Aviation Pilot Basic Training School 10;
1950 - graduated from the Tchuguev Higher
Air Force Pilot School;
September, 1961 - January, 1968 - student
of the N. E. Zhukovsky Higher Military Engineering Academy on the specialty
of “Design and application of air-spacecraft and their engines”. Was qualified
as a “pilot-cosmonaut-engineer”;
1975 - was granted a degree of Candidate
of Technology.
OCCUPATION BEFORE JOINING COSMONAUT CORPS:
From October 30, 1957 – pilot in parachute
aviation regiment 113 of the Guards engineering aviation division of the
Air Army 69, Kiev military district.
From December 14, 1959 – senior pilot
of the separate scouting air regiment 294 of the Air Army 24, Group of
Soviet Armed Forces in Germany.

March 7, 1960 - was enrolled as a student-cosmonaut
in the cosmonaut corps of the Air Force Cosmonaut Training Center by the
Air Force commander-in-chief order ( the first enrollment );
From April 5, 1961 - cosmonaut of Cosmonaut
Training Center cosmonaut group.
RATING: an Air Force parachute training
instructor, a first-class military pilot ( 1965 ), a second-class cosmonaut
(1975).
BACK-UP ACTIVITY:
April-May, 1963 - back-up pilot for “Vostok-5”
spacecraft on the program of the two spacecraft group flight;
May 13, 1970 - back-up crew commander
of the Salyut long-term orbital station 1;
September 18, 1970 - March 20, 1971- back-up
crew commander on the program of Expedition 1 together with V. Kubasov
and P. Kolodin;
April 23, 1971 – back-up to the Soyuz-10
spacecraft V. Shatalov.
SPACEFLIGHTS PERFORMED:
The 1st flight – March 18-19, 1965,
the 2nd pilot of the Voskhod-2 spacecraft together with P. Beliayev.
During the flight he performed the world’s first extravehicular activity.
During the returning to the Earth automatic control system failed and P.
Beliayev performed manual control of landing, which took place in off-nominal
area 180 km from Perm town. The crew was found in four hours in the forest
(between Sorokovaya and Schuchino villages) and evacuated from the landing
site in two days. Flight duration: 1 day 02 hours 02 minutes 17
seconds. Call sign: “Almaz-1”.
The 2nd flight – July 15-21, 1975, a
commander of the Soyuz-19 spacecraft on APAS program together with V. Kubasov.
During the flight two dockings with the Apollo spacecraft (USA, the crew
– T. Stafford, V. Brand and D. Slaiton) were performed. During the mated
flight the crewmembers transferred from one vehicle to the other. Flight
duration: 5 days 22 hours 30 minutes 51 seconds. Call sign:
“Soyuz-1”.
DISCHARGE FROM COSMONAUT CORPS: 1982
- is discharged from the cosmonaut corps because of the appointment
to another position.

Yu.A. Gagarin Chief Cosmonaut Training Center on flight and space training.
