Twice Hero of the Soviet Union, cosmonaut of the USSR

Performed three space missions as commander
of “Soyuz-13”
, “Soyuz-18” and “Soyuz-30” vehicles

 

 

Pyotr Klimuk was born in 1942, Komarovka village, Brest region, BSSR (Belorussia).

He graduated with honors from the Chernigov High Military Aviation School of Pilots after Leninsky Komsomol in 1964.  

Entered the cosmonaut corps in 1965. Completed full course of basic training and training for a space flight on the “Soyuz”-type vehicles and “Salyut”-type orbital stations.
In 1977, he graduated from the Yu.A. Gagarin Air Force Academy (the correspondence department).

In 1995, he was awarded the “Candidate of Technical Sciences” degree.
In 2000, he was awarded the “Doctor of Technical Sciences” degree.
From 1991 through 2003, he headed the Yu.A. Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center.
At the present time, he is a member of the Public Chamber of the Union State and a member of the Public Chamber of Moscow Region.

He is an author of 100 scientific papers.

For merit to the fatherland, he was awarded two Gold Star medals of the Hero of the Soviet Union (1973, 1975), three Orders of Lenin (1973, 1975, 1978), the Order “For Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR” of the 3d class (1984), the order “For Services to the Fatherland” of the 3d class (2000), the order “For Services to the Fatherland” of the 4th class (1996).

Moreover, he was awarded the gold medal named after K.E. Tsiolkovsky of the USSR’s Academy of Sciences, the gold medal of the Academy of Sciences of the People’s Republic of Poland, the gold medal named after Yu.A. Gagarin and an honorary diploma named after V.M. Komarov. He is a winner of the State Prizes of the USSR (1978, 1981).

Since 1991, he is a full member (academician) of the Russian Academy of Cosmonautics named after K.E. Tsiolkovsky. Since 2000, he is an Academician of the International Academy of Information Sciences. Since 1997, he is a Professor at the UNESCO Chair. He is a corresponding member of the International Academy of Astronautics. In 2005 he became a professor of the Belarusian State Agrarian University. Honorary Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (2017).

From 2001 through 2014 he headed the Space Monitoring Department of the Moscow Aviation-Technological University named after K.E. Tsiolkovsky.

Research interests:
- manned space exploration, cosmonaut training;
- exploration of near-Earth space;
- safety of space missions;
- exploration of the Earth from space.
